The accused has been identified as Bekithemba Sibanda (27) of 1.2 infantry Hwange Army Battalion.

Victoria Falls police’s district spokesperson Deputy Chief Superintendent Dominic Sibanda confirmed the incident, adding that the accused was already in custody helping police with investigations.

“The deceased (Alvis Ngwenya) was a blood uncle to the accused and were neighbours in Monde Village under Chief Mvuthu,” Sibanda said.

“We received information yesterday evening and we immediately took action. During investigations the wife of the late told us that her husband was called to come urgently to Sibanda’s homestead at around 6pm after hinting to us that he wanted him to build a hut for him. He immediately went there but upon arrival the topic quickly changed with Sibanda accusing his uncle for asking out his wife.

“As he was trying to defend himself, Sibanda using the army training skills ordered Ngwenya to remove his clothes, poured cold water on him before ordering him to lie on the ground as he thoroughly beat him using a log and forcing him to do press-ups.”

Police said after the torture, Ngwenya was released and walked back to his homestead an hour later where he narrated his ordeal to his wife. The deceased’s wife immediately called the police as she took her husband to the hospital.

Sibanda was arrested that same evening as he attempted to board a Hwange-bound bus in a bid to flee arrest.

Ngwenya allegedly succumbed to the assault injuries yesterday morning.
