He said he had not been in contact with the Beitbridge-based club and was not interested in taking over as coach at the newly-promoted Castle Lager Premier Soccer League side.

“I never attended any interview at Border Strikers. I am not interested. I still have a contract with FC Platinum,” Tapera said.

Among those that have also been linked with the job are former Shabanie Mine coach John Phiri, Saul Chamunika and Gweru United’s Peter Manoti.

Manoti is, however, still at Gweru United.

Meanwhile, Border Strikers, who, at the beginning of the week, said they had identified their coach to take them through their maiden campaign in the top league, have, however, indicated they are still tying some loose ends before announcing the name of the gaffer.

Club secretary Rodlet Chigwinya had told NewsDay Sport, they would be unveiling the coach at the end of the week after meeting with the club’s board of trustees on Wednesday.

“We are still finalising some issues. We might be naming the coach tomorrow (today) or on Saturday, but otherwise the boys have started their pre-season training under coach Never Malunga and so far, everything has been going on very well,” he said.

Malunga, who took the team to the Premiership after winning the Zifa Central Region Soccer League championship, does not meet the minimum requirements to coach at PSL level.

Border Strikers become the third side from Beitbridge to play in the Premiership after Underhill and Tripple B and will be using Dulibadzimu Stadium in the border town.
