Caps Utd sponsorship deal in limbo

CAPS United’s kit sponsorship deal is in limbo amid reports that their contract with Spanish sportswear manufacturer, Joma has been terminated.

It is understood the Harare football giants have now been forced to buy a new kit from their former technical sponsor, Joma following the termination of the deal.
This, according to information obtained from sources, is costing the club and some within the leadership are not happy.

The Green Machine is said to have bought four sets of kit ahead of the start of the 2016 Castle Lager Premiership season since Joma was no longer supplying the kit following termination of the contract by one of the club’s bosses who was in favour of another kit manufacturer Roar.

The Green Machine used the kit from Roar in the 2014 season.

Caps United board member in charge of marketing Alois Bunjira could not shed more light, but confirmed that there were some issues which they were trying to resolve.

“Right now I cannot give details because there are issues that have to be resolved first. I can only be in position to give you more details on Monday (today),” Bunjira said.

Highlanders and Dynamos, dressed by Germany sports wear manufacturer Adidas, are the only other two teams in the Premiership with technical sponsors.

Joma who also dress the Warriors are understood to be targeting going into bed with Caps United rivals Dynamos and Highlanders.

However, Caps United are believed to be making frantic efforts to rescue the deal amid reports that some board members are questioning how the deal got to be terminated and the rationale behind that move.

Joma is said to have decided against going to court over the termination of the contract, but is understood to be willing to enter into a new marriage with the Green Machine.

Joma spokesperson Fatima Antipas referred further questions to Caps United, but confirmed that the club had bought a kit from them ahead of the start of the campaign.

“As far as we are concerned our sponsorship deal was running up until March and we have not received anything in writing from Caps United on their future,” Antipas said.

“But it’s true that they bought a kit from us. You can get in touch with them for more information regarding the future,” Antipas said.

The Green Machine have said they will take their pre-season tour to South Africa where they are scheduled to play South African Premiership giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.

The Harare giants who finished in fifth position under Lloyd Chitembwe who took over towards the end of last season’s campaign have declared they will be fighting for honours this term.
