Mpostori Wency’s top drawer act

GOSPEL sensation Wencilus “Mpostori Wency” Makungisa on Saturday night proved he was a star to watch out for in the music circles after putting up a top drawer act during his much-awaited Mvura Yakawanda DVD live recording at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale.

To his credit, the gospel music prodigy who made his name as part of the high-flying Zimpraise Choir, drew some of the finest gospel acts in the country including Bethan Pasinawako, Takesure Zamar and Psalmist Josh Kays.

Sharon Manyonganise and Ellard Cherayi from Zimpraise were also among the supporting acts.

Josh and Bethan took to the stage first and gave scintillating performances paving way for Mpostori Wency, who opened his act with Yera Yera before belting out Nguva Yekutenda and Mwari Ariko.

He then performed Mucheki alongside Manyonganise and then Takesure belted the song, Simbarashe.

Mpostori Wency’s performance on the theme song, Mvura Yakawanda, was so moving that it got many of those who attended the launch on their feet. The song started off as a solo, accompanied with the sweet sounds of a trumpet in the introduction, before steering the crowd into a prayerful atmosphere as they waved their hands.

The musician wrapped up his act with the well-loved rhumba-fusion track, Obrigado, which left fans clamouring for more.

The debut DVD album launch marked a new plateau for the singer, who started his music journey in 2003 as a backing vocalist for Joyce Simeti and Bethan. In 2005, he joined an outfit called Christian Entertainment before music producer McDonald “McDee” Chidavaenzi roped him into Zimpraise Choir in 2006.

The DVD was culled from Mpostori Wency’s second album, Mvura Yakawanda. His first album, Jesu Muri Zuva Rangu, was released in 2006. It carried hit tracks such as Wauya Mucheki, Musandikanganwe and Kurudzira Mwana.
