Charles Gunde of plot number 55, Kournine Farm in Macheke was on Tuesday convicted on charges of malicious damage to property by Marondera magistrate Jabulani Mzinyathi.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour, while the remaining 12 months were commuted to 420 hours of community service at Chirinda Primary School in Macheke.

When asked by the court why he committed the offence, Gunde said he was incensed to learn his wife was taking ARVs without his knowledge.

According to court papers, on December 19 last year at around 1pm, Gunde arrived at his homestead where he started assaulting his wife Joyce Mukuna (38), accusing her of cheating on him.

In a fit of rage, he went on to set ablaze three huts at the homestead destroying property worth $450.

He was arrested by the police.
