Businessman Modern Sikhuthele Ngwenya was elected Highlanders vice-chairperson in a closely-contested poll, shrugging off a challenge from Bulawayo entrepreneur Kenneth Mhlophe at the team’s clubhouse yesterday.

Ngwenya received 90 votes, narrowly beating Mhlophe by four votes, while former vice-chairman, Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu got a paltry 19, with Nkosinathi Ncube, who once again lost after trying his luck for the fourth time, picked up a measly six votes.
Two-hundred and one club members cast their ballots.
Donald Ndebele beat former Premier Soccer League chief cashier, Charles Ndlovu by 19 votes, picking up 115 votes against Ndlovu’s 86 for the treasurer’s post.
Before the latest developments, Ngwenya was chairman of the Harare chapter of the Highlanders supporters and he joins chairman Peter Dube, treasurer Ndebele, secretary Emmett Ndlovu and committee member Wisdom Mabhena in the Bosso leadership.
Ngwenya was elated after the electoral court chairman Jonathan Sayi Moyo announced he had been elected the new Highlanders vice-chairman.

“I am your messenger. I respect you as members of the club. Delegate me and I will do your wishes,” he said to the Highlanders members.
Treasurer, Ndebele who said during his past tenure he had helped reduce Highlanders’ debt by over $160 000, appealed to the members to work together in trying to clear the debt, which is over $500 000.
“Highlanders does not belong to the executive committee. Let us work together,” he implored the Bosso family.
The two will be officially presented to the board of directors and incumbent executive committee members at a meeting to be held later today.
Board chairman, Mgcini Nkolomi paid tribute to the club members who voted yesterday.
“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank you all for participating in this noble cause. Our role (as the board) is to support these men that you have elected. Let us do it with the intention of building this institution. We hope you will rally behind these men,” Nkolomi said.
