At the close of the nomination court sitting in Chinhoyi yesterday, only two candidates had submitted their papers to contest the seat which fell vacant following the ouster of Sylvester Nguni, who was accused of working with the ex-Vice President Joice Mujuru’s People First (PF).

The Freedom Front will be represented by Rodwell Nyanganya.

Earlier, People First spokesperson Rugare Gumbo had said his party wanted to field a candidate, but shelved the plan “because we are yet to be registered, it would be difficult to do so”.

“We need to put our systems in order and then deal with the issue of fielding candidates in elections be it by-election or general. We are in the process of establishing one anytime soon,” Gumbo said.

There were a sizeable number of people at the nomination court with speculation that Nguni, the former MP, was planning to submit his papers to contest as an independent candidate.

But Nguni was nowhere to be seen until close of nomination at 4pm.

Freedom Front president Cosmas Mponda said his party had fielded a candidate to ensure Zanu PF would not get the seat uncontested.

“We can’t just sit and fold our hands. We have to play ball whether the playing field is even or not. People are suffering. We should be seen to be doing something,” Mponda said.
