Tennis star Lock gets another US accolade

ZIMBABWE Davis Cup player Courtney Lock, who is enjoying a superb start to the season in the United States with the University of Louisville team, added an impressive accomplishment to his résumé after being named Atlantic Coast Conference (AAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Lock’s stock in the US has been on the rise since making his Davis Cup debut for Zimbabwe in a Euro/Africa Zone Group II play-off encounter against Moldova last year.

The latest recognition, which came after a string of impressive results against some of the top players in the highly-competitive AAC, makes him the first University of Louisville player to win the weekly honour.

“Lock from Zimbabwe, earned University of Louisville’s first weekly conference honours after helping the Cardinals to a 3-1 record in their opening weekend,” the Kentucky-based university announced on their official website on Wednesday.

“Lock also picked up doubles wins in the Dayton, Northwestern and Morehead State matches,” read the match report on the websiteLock, whose elder brother Benjamin is the top player at Florida State University, made his Davis Cup debut for Zimbabwe in July last year during the Euro/Africa Group II playoffs which the hosts comfortably won 5-0 at Harare Sports Club.

After singles wins by the country’s number one player Takanyi Garanganga and Benjamin, Courtney teamed with Mark Fynn for a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (6) victory over Dmitrii Baskov and Andrei Soltoinnu to clinch the match for Zimbabwe.

Lock’s recent run of good form should come as good news to Zimbabwe Davis Cup team non-playing captain Martin Dzuwa, who is expected to announce his team next week ahead of the Euro/Africa Group II away tie against Finland from March 4-6.
