National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba told NewsDay yesterday that the city had recorded a sharp increase in hit-and-run cases.

“I am coming from Chikurubi (Police Support Unit Camp) where impounded cars are being kept,” Charamba said.

“We have witnessed a significant increase of hit-and-run cases and we suspect these unroadworthy cars known as ‘mshika-shika’ are behind this since some of the drivers do not have licences,” she said.

“Since Monday there has an operation enforced by police and the city council where about 100 cars have been impounded,” she said, adding: “The safety of pedestrians has been put at stake and we cannot continue to behave as if all is normal.”

Most of the pirate taxis ply routes leading to Parirenyatwa Hospital as well as the CBD, Fourth Street and Copacabana bus terminuses.

Hundreds of pedestrians have either been injured or killed as the operators evade police and city council authorities.
