ASPIRING Highlanders vice-chairperson Modern Sikhuthele Ngwenya said he will advocate for constitutional changes that will usher in structural changes in the club’s leadership during their annual general meeting (AGM) to be held on January 31.

Ngwenya, who is chairman of the Highlanders Supporters’ Association (Harare Chapter), is challenging incumbent Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu, who confirmed that he will seek re-election in the upcoming election.
Ngwenya said the current three-tier leadership system at Highlanders which is made up of a board of directors, executive committee and secretariat, is unworkable and not in line with Fifa club licensing regulations.
The current Highlanders board is chaired by Mgcini Nkolomi, the executive committee led by Peter Dube with Ndumiso Gumede heading the club’s secretariat as chief executive officer.
“I will assist the club in ensuring adherence to the Fifa requirements in the administration of football vis-à-vis club licensing,” Ngwenya told NewsDay Sport yesterday.
“I think I mentioned the idea of me assisting and influencing constitutional reforms earlier. You realise that in Zimbabwe we are still lagging behind in terms of Fifa regulations. Even our structure at Highlanders right now doesn’t adhere to Fifa regulations. I will make sure that I assist and influence decision-making,” Ngwenya said referring to his manifesto.

“When we are talking about constitutional reforms, we are talking about adherence to Fifa regulations.
“Right now, we have got a board of directors that makes decisions and an executive that makes decisions. There is a conflict of interest. It’s a bloated system and you cannot progress. I will be pushing for a constitutional reform at the AGM in that regard. It will be the best for Highlanders,” Ngwenya said in a question-and-answer session with journalists.
Ngwenya also pledged to assist in the mobilisation of financial resources for the club and to develop strategic business plans for the club’s ventures, the clubhouse and Manwele Beer Garden.
Another name that has been thrown into the fray for the vice-chairman’s post is that of Bulawayo businessman Kenneth Mhlophe.
Two posts – that of the vice-chairman and treasurer, the latter held by Donald Ndebele – fall vacant after the AGM.
Ndebele was co-opted into the executive committee in June last year after former treasurer Jerry Sibanda was recalled by his employers Bulawayo City Council to chair newly-promoted Premier Soccer League side Bulawayo City.
