Chigwedere, son witchcraft trial begins

Former Education minister and Mashonaland East headman, Aeneas Chigwedere is today expected to appear at the Harare Civil Court to answer to witchcraft charges levelled against him by his son, Magwiza.

BY Jairos Saunyama

Magwiza last year approached the courts, accusing his father of practising witchcraft, claiming he had goblins that were terrorising family members.

Chigwedere is being sued together with his wife, Emilia Zharare, a stepmother to Magwiza.

According to court papers, Magwiza wants the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers’ Association to destroy the goblins and cited the association as a third respondent in the case.

But Chigwedere, in opposing affidavit filed by his lawyer Tendai Masawi, denied the accusations and dismissed Magwiza as a mental patient who needed psychiatric help.

Chigwedere said the matter was frivolous and a waste of the court’s time.

Magwiza, in his application, accused his father’s alleged goblins of causing the death of a number of family members and causing women in the family not to get married or fail to conceive.
