The pair was part of the more than 45 players who pitched at the club’s first training session at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.

Maphosa’s contract at Highlanders expired on December 31, having spent the better part of the past season on the sidelines due to a nagging knee injury, while Banda appeared to have fallen out of favour with his employers How Mine, as he did not feature for the club in the last few games of the campaign last term.

Also in attendance at the training was Hwange’s Nkosana Siwela and Malvin Nyakabangwe, who played for relegated WhaWha last season.

However, coach Philani “Beefy” Ncube could not say whether he would add the four players to his 26-member squad in preparation for the forthcoming season.

He revealed he would add two senior and two junior players.

But a close inspection of his squad shows it is a largely inexperienced one that needs to be blended for it to withstand the rigours of the Premier Soccer League.

“I am not assessing anyone. We have already signed 26 players and only need four more – two senior and two junior. We are human, we cannot turn away anyone who pitches up for training to try his luck. Players are looking for jobs Ncube said.

“Unless a miracle happens and I spot someone with a rare talent like Lionel Messi, then maybe we can talk. Otherwise we have started full training and we are not holding any trials. Most of these players will not be here tomorrow and I am still expecting more to come.”

Among those already signed were former Chicken Inn striker Mkhokheli Dube, Makhosi Ncube, Lewis “Rambo” Ncube, Qinani “Chroma” Sibanda, Welcome Ndiweni, Warren Dube, Mkhululi Moyo, Eddie Nkulungo and goalkeepers Ndodana Sibanda, Archford Katsande and Aaron Ngwenya.

Ncube said he is still expecting another former Chicken Inn player, Thomas Chimenya, and former Highlanders player Edmore Muzanenhamo to join the rest of the players. Muzanenhamo plays for Division One side Ntabazinduna, a prison team which had loaned the him to Bosso last year.
