Highlanders hold AGM

HIGHLANDERS Football Club will tomorrow hold their annual general meeting (AGM) with the appointment of new coach and the club’s crippling debt expected to dominate deliberations.

Bosso appointed Elroy Akbay, but the Dutchman is yet to get a work permit.

Amini Soma Phiri and Cosmas Zulu, who coached the club in the last phases of the 2015 season after Bongani Mafu was fired, are in charge of the team’s pre-season preparations.

“One of the main issues that could be discussed as a matter arising from the previous minutes is the issue of the club’s debt. This boils down to the contracts of the coaches and the players. The club has been signing players and some of them have not been paid contributing to the ballooning debt,” said Morgan Dube, who is also the Matabeleland North chapter chairperson.

Highlanders supporters celebrate their team's win after the match.

He said they resolved on producing their own players in their previous AGM instead of buying, a situation that is contributing to the ballooning of the debt.
Recently, Mthulisi Maphosa wrote to the club demanding $7 000 in outstanding allowances and signing-on fees.

Last year the club had to move fast to avoid having their property attached to pay former player Masimba Mambare who had taken the club to court to recover his money.

A club member, Faith Silandulo Dube, said the club’s constitution should also be discussed to conform with Fifa club licencing.

“The constitutional restructuring, which is in line with Fifa club licencing must be given careful consideration. The terms of executive members must be limited to four years,” he said.

He urged the new coach to start helping out with the preparations for the coming season. “We hope the new coach has shared with his assistants his pre-season programme, otherwise we have lost potentially valuable time in our preparations and this might haunt us,” Dube said.
