The departure of Mukandi, one of the stars of Caps United under Lloyd Chitembwe last term, left the Green Machine looking for reinforcements in their midfield department and after being alerted of the availability of Chafa, whose contract with How Mine expired on December 31, they moved swiftly to engage the former Dynamos midfielder.

Chafa, who is already training with the Green Machine while negotiations for a contract continue, joined How Mine from Dynamos on a one-year contract in January last season.

Following the expiry of his contract with the gold miners, the midfielder has opted to join rivals Caps United.

The player’s manager, Gibson Mahachi confirmed yesterday talks were going on between the two parties.

“Negotiations are currently underway. There is nothing concrete yet, we are still talking,” he said.

Several other players, including winger Tafadzwa Rusike and Allen Gahadzikwa, are also training with Caps United hoping to impress Chitembwe and sign contracts.

The Green Machine have already signed Edmore “Zikeeper” Sibanda from Division One side Gunners, left-back Ronald Pfumbidzai, who returned after an unsuccessful spell in Denmark, 2014 Soccer Star of the Year, Dennis Dauda and former Triangle midfielder Cabby Kamhapa.

Defender Method Mwanjali and striker Simba Nhivi are also set to be part of the squad this season, having been training with the club since last season, but had not been registered.

Caps United, whose president Farai Jere has declared they are targeting winning the championship this season, have also tied down utility player Hardlife Zvirekwi to a three-year deal.

Zvirekwi is currently with the Warriors in Rwanda for the African Nations Championship (Chan) tournament.

He was handed the armband to lead the team at the tournament following the injury of Danny Phiri.

Two other Caps United players, defender Stephen Makatuka and midfielder Joel Ngodzo, are also with the Warriors in Rwanda.

Caps United, who began their pre-season preparations on January 19, finished in fifth position in the league in the previous campaign, but Chitembwe believes the Green Machine should be seen to be fighting for honours, something which he said was befitting their status as one of the biggest teams in the country.
