NewsDay is reliably informed that a Constable Virira, who was stationed at Jotsholo Police Station, was stabbed and died, as he tried to separate two men who were allegedly trying to kill a third one.

“Virira went there alone, leaving behind a colleague. Along the way, he met three guys, who were fighting. Two of them were trying to kill the third person, and so Virira called on one of the neighbourhood watch committee (NWC) members to assist him in stopping the fight,” a source said.

One of the two attackers was subdued and handed over to the NWC member.

“When Virira tried to apprehend the second attacker, the latter opened an Okapi knife and stabbed the PISI constable.”

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department in Lupane are said to have attended the scene.

Virira’s body was taken to Lupane District Hospital for a post-mortem.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba could not immediately confirm the incident, as she was said to be in a meeting.

Virira is to be buried in Masvingo today.
