The band’s representative, Memmalatel “Mojo” Morgan, was in the country last month and had penned a deal with local promoter, Biggie Chinoperekwei of Divine Assignments, for the potentially explosive concert.

If everything had gone according to plan, the 16-member outfit was expected in the country on December 28 ahead of a one-off performance that would have included the launch of their 10th studio album titled Strictly Roots in Africa.

Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, Chinoperekwei said they had received overwhelming response from the fans and felt for security reasons, there was need to move the concert to a better and bigger venue.

“When we opted for City Sports Centre, we thought it was going to be a suitable venue for Morgan Heritage’s debut concert in Zimbabwe, but we had since discovered that the venue will be too small, hence, we postponed the concert to a date yet to be advised,” he said.

“From our research, we have also learnt that Morgan Heritage have never performed in-doors, which is something we had overlooked and as a result will be hosting the concert at a better and bigger open venue for the security of our fans.” Chinoperekwei, however, said they are still committed to bringing the 16-member outfit at a date and venue to be advised.

“It might be disappointing for many Morgan Heritage fans, but as Divine Assignments, we respect them (fans) and we promise and assure them that we are still and will remain committed to bring Morgan Heritage for a maiden performance as they had requested,” he said.

Undoubtedly one of contemporary reggae’s most powerful forces on the global stage, Morgan Heritage’s fans will have to wait for another date if the band is to come.

The growing popularity of reggae and dancehall in the country has seen Zimbabwe undoubtedly becoming more a country of choice for many Jamaican artistes, as seen by the number of those who have performed here.

This year Charly Black, born Desmond Mendez, Jepther McClymont, better known as Luciano, Konshens, born Garfield Delano Spence and Byiome Muir — better known by his stage name I-Octane performing in the country, while previous years the likes of Beenie Man, Sizzla, Kalado, Turbulence, Mavado, Capleton, Lutan Fyah, Beres Hammond, Cocoa Tea and Fantan Mojah also performed in the country.
