Speaking to NewsDay, the pageant spokesperson Wilbert Rukato said the deferment of the pageant is a way of showing respect and honour to the renowned Divaris for her abundant contribution to the local modelling sector.

“As Miss Summer Zimbabwe organisers and sponsors of the pageant, we have decided to defer the pageant so that we can join others in mourning our legend who contributed a lot in our modelling fraternity,” Rukato said.

“We are done with the selection of the contestants with 16 of them drawn from Harare, Kwekwe, Bulawayo, Kadoma and Mutare making it to the grand finale on December 24 at Private Lounge in the capital.”

Rukato promised a show of glitz and glamour to mark the return of the pageant running under the theme Celebrating Summer with Glitz and Glamour in Style.

He said categories at the pageant would include slinky summer attire, summer-flavoured ethnic wear and cocktail-type evening dress.

“The female models will take part alongside 10 male models that will be competing for the first time in the pageant in a contest dubbed Mr Cool 2015. They will walk on the ramp in African warrior wear and gentleman-style evening attire categories,” Rukato said.

Apart from the modelling extravaganza, Rukato said there would be entertainment provided by several local artistes he would not name saying they were still negotiating terms.

The pageant was founded as Miss Summer Queen in the capital in November 1998 as a partnership between Size4 and Samwil Promotion before being rebranded to Miss Summer Zimbabwe.

The inaugural queen, Sharon Snowden, went on to do modelling work in Europe and South Africa, where she did well. Other models to emerge from the inaugural pageant include former Miss Zimbabwe, Phoebe Monjane, and top model Conie Moyo.
