ICC World T20 trophy coming to Zim


The 2016 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 trophy is scheduled to arrive in Zimbabwe between January 2 and 3 as part of its journey across the globe.


The trophy which embarked on its global journey from Mumbai, India yesterday is expected to return to New Delhi on February 1.
As part of the Nissan Trophy Tour, the trophy will visit 12 countries namely Scotland, Ireland, England, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia.

The trophy’s African safari will be from January 2 to 7, during which it will make appearances in Harare (January 2 and 3) and Cape Town (January 5 to 7).

During its journey, the trophy will be on display at domestic matches, as well as at various other public places, which will enable the fans to capture a special moment with the most prestigious silverware in the shortest format of the game.

Details of the trophy’s public appearances will be announced by the host boards closer to the time.

“The Nissan ICC World T20 2016 Trophy Tour has been designed to not only promote the tournament, but also to engage with our fans and provide them the first opportunity to get close to the trophy, which will be lifted by the winning captain on April 3 in Kolkata,” ICC chief executive David Richardson said in a media release yesterday.

“We would like to thank Nissan for their sponsorship of the Trophy Tour and we are sure it will be a big success, as it travels across the world ahead of the ICC WorldT20 in India next year.”

Zimbabwe, were last week drawn in Group B of next year’s 2016 World Twenty20 cricket tournament with Hong Kong, Scotland and Afghanistan and will need to finish top of the group to reach the Super 10 stage.

India will host next year’s ICC World Twenty20, which will be staged across eight venues from March 8 to April 3.
