Mubaiwa was killed after a tree fell on his car as he drove along Borrowdale Road near the State House.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to announce with sorrow the untimely passing on of Officer Commanding Harare province Senior Assistant Commissioner Shadreck Mubaiwa in a fatal road traffic accident, which occurred along Borrowdale Road opposite St George’s College on December 26, 2015 at around 1800hrs.

“As the senior officer was travelling, his vehicle was hit by a falling Cyprus tree on the roof. He sustained internal head injuries and was referred to Avenues Clinic where he was referred to AMI Centre, where he later passed on,” police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said in the statement.

Mubaiwa (54) the statement added was traveling with his wife and a granddaughter when his Ford Ranger vehicle was hit by the falling tree.

He was moved to Harare in a police top brass reshuffle that followed the internal mayhem that rocked the ruling Zanu PF party at the tail end of last year. Mubaiwa was previously officer commanding the Midlands Province.

This came amid reports that the move was meant to deal with those linked to a faction of the party reportedly headed by then Vice President Joice Mujuru.

Mujuru was also to be shown the door along with a host of other top party officials linked to an alleged “sinister plot” to oust Mugabe by foul means.
