According to a statement on the Zifa website yesterday, the contentious Joshua Nkomo Legacy Shield had been “postponed” and the two giants would clash for the Unity Cup.

Winners will walk away with $20 000 and the losers $15 000, a big boost for both teams as they head for the off-season.

The association announced that there would be free entry at the gates for the match.

Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela explained the postponement of the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Shield.

“The Joshua Nkomo Legacy Shield which had been billed for this year has been postponed to pave way for the Zifa Unity Cup, and will now be the 2016 season opener,” Gwesela said on the association’s website. “Football can unite our nation and we can celebrate this landmark agreement towards preserving peace and harmony through football.

“We appeal to the general public to celebrate the match in peace and brotherhood manner.”

DeMbare and Bosso players who are part of the national team squad preparing for the Chan tournament will not be allowed to participate in the clash.

Earlier Highlanders held a Press conference where club chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede reiterated that the club would not participate in the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Shield.

He said that the club had already released its players for the festive season.

Yesterday Gwesela said that they had notified Bosso about the new arrangement, but it was not clear last night whether Bosso would agree to partake in the Unity Cup match.
