Former Shabanie Mine coach John Phiri has been touted as the favourite to take over after he impressed at Town United whom he led to a second spot finish in the Central Region Division One.

The minumum requirement for one to coach in the topflight is a Caf C license, but Malunga only possesses a Zimbabwe Coaches’ Association Level Four qualification.

Strikers’ secretary-general Gibson Makanda confirmed that the club is on the market for a coach.

“We are yet to contact PSL on our situation, but we would have preferred to have Malunga as our coach next season,” Makanda said.

“Our coach, however, does not have the qualifications the authorities want. If we are hiring a new coach to come and work with Malunga we prefer someone from our community.

“As an executive, we are yet to come up with alternative names. But the idea is to recruit someone who has the ability to lead a team against the best coaches locally.”

Several names have been thrown around that could fill in the vacant post and the club hopes to retain Malunga in the structures.

Former Dynamos and FC Platinum head coach Lloyd Mutasa’s name has been mentioned although the coach pledged to down to Division One with WhaWha.

Phiri is likely to land the post after charming the Beitbridge football fans during his stint as Town United head coach.

Phiri arrived in Beitbridge after Match Day 10 but propelled the municipal side to second place finish in the Central Region Division League. The former has been out of employment since being booted out by Shabanie Mine.
