The convict, Chineka Tavengerwei, a general hand at Hydon Farm, will, however, spend only 12 months behind bars after six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

According to the State papers, the incident leading to Tavengerwei’s arrest occurred sometime in September this year at around 7am when he had a misunderstanding with Patience Gweme on buying food.

The court heard Tavengerwei was in the habit of leaving Gweme at home without food each time he went to work.

On the day in question, all hell broke loose, when Gweme asked Tavengerwei for food and the latter was not happy, but proceeded to assault her.

The court heard, while assaulting his wife, Tavengerwei hit her several times on the head with a brick before proceeding to bite her left ear.

The matter was reported to police leading to Tavengerwei’s arrest and conviction, but in a bid to fight for his freedom, Tavengerwei recently filed an appeal against both conviction and sentence at the High Court.

He submitted through his lawyer that the crime was “committed in the heat of the moment” and although his conduct should not be condoned, a custodial sentence was too harsh under the circumstances.
