A HARARE teenager was yesterday sentenced to 210 hours of community service for illegal possession of a November 2015 O Level mathematics examination paper before it was due for sitting in contravention of the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council Act.

Nyasha Chigulu (19) was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe.
“Despite that you pleaded guilty thus showing contrition, this is becoming a prevalent case and a deterrent sentence is, therefore, called. You are sentenced to eight months in prison, two months suspended for five years and the remaining six are commuted to 210 hours of community service,” Mahwe ruled.
“The community service starts tomorrow [today] at Warren Park Polyclinic and should be completed within seven weeks.”
It was the State’s case that Chigulu met an unidentified man at Zimpost Inez Terrace in the city on October 20 this year, who claimed he had the mathematics O Level Paper 2. Chigulu took pictures of the question paper using a mobile phone and forwarded the images to his friend, Rose Maungwe, a Form Four pupil, through social media platform WhatsApp.
The matter was discovered by police detectives, leading to his arrest. Chigulu then implicated Masimba Muranda, Maungwe and another unidentified man who is still at large.
