Leon Misheck Chapika and Alice Muramba were lucky to get away with community service after magistrate Tendai Mahwe took into consideration they were first offenders.

In passing sentence, the magistrate said the court wished to send a strong message that it frowned upon immorality.

“A message has to be sent that our society does not tolerate such conduct and that people should only remove their clothes when they are in their own homes,” the magistrate said.

“You are, therefore, sentenced to six months in prison, two of which are suspended for the next five years on condition you don’t commit a similar offence in that period. The remaining four months are commuted to 140 hours of community service, starting on November 30 and should be completed in the next five weeks.”

The court also said the conduct of the pair tainted the image of the country, as it portrayed Zimbabweans as decadent people. “You stripped naked in a bar and your conduct paints a bad image of our morals. Our morals in Zimbabwe have not gotten that bad,” Mahwe said.

It was the State’s case that Chapika and Muramba were part of a group of people who got excited and started stripping in a club as they enjoyed themselves.

The couple is said to have performed striptease acts in the bar, annoying other patrons who called the police.

Police failed to effect any arrests on the particular night, but later relied on nude pictures circulating on social media platforms to arrest the two.
