Sanitation and hygiene issues come under the spotlight at a Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (Cafod) organised two-day Sanitation and Hygiene Festival set to begin in Nyanga today.

Cafod country representative, Verity Johnson said the festival, to be attended by government officials, diplomats, school children and community members, would kick off tonight with a panel discussion on sanitation and hygiene in Zimbabwe.
“The idea is to create a platform where the current sanitation service delivery challenges in urban areas are discussed with a view to inform policy and practice,” Johnson said in a statement.
The discussion will be held under the theme Sustainable Urban Sanitation Service Delivery — Is it just a dream for Zimbabwean towns?
A one-kilometre march from Nyamhuka bus terminus to Nyanga Country Club has also been organised, where exhibitors will showcase their sanitation and hygiene innovations and ideas.
The festival is being held as part of a three-year sanitation for success programme, where Cafod is partnering with another Catholic non-governmental organisation, Caritas International, in efforts to sustainably improve the living conditions, health, human dignity, economic productivity and the environment in poor urban and peri-urban areas of Nyanga and Murehwa, Major partners include Nyanga Rural District Council, Murehwa Rural District Council, Health and Child Care ministry, Education ministry, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the Department of Public Works.

Rural Development, Preservation and Promotion of Culture and Heritage minister Abednigo Ncube, European Union ambassador Philippe van Damme, senior government officials, community leaders, academics and school children are expected to take part in the festival.
