Relegated Dongo Sawmill frustrate How Mine

Relegated Dongo Sawmill produced their fourth win of the season when they edged How Mine in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Luveve Stadium yesterday.

That Dongo Sawmill had one coach and a medic, in addition to five substitutes on the bench, sums how everything has been shoddy for them in their maiden, but short-lived season in the topflight.

Six minutes into the game, striker Elias Stephen struck past How Mine goalkeeper, Munyaradzi Diya, in a defensive mix-up, from a Collins Dhuwa corner-kick and Dongo Sawmill defended the goal to the final whistle.

The gold miners are yet to win since the departure of Luke Masomere in September and lie on position 11 on the log table with 34 points.

Caretaker coach, Jeremiah Makote, said his boys tried everything, but the goals were not coming.

“The boys did everything, but they could not score and they (Dongo) got one chance and scored,” he said.

“We wanted the three points to try and end the season in a respectable position, which we could have achieved with a win today.
We go back to the drawing board and prepare for our last game against Chapungu.”

Fungai Chirinda was the standout performer for How Mine.

After the goal, Dongo, employed a defensive approach relying on counter-attacks, a game plan that frustrated How Mine’s efforts, with Kuda Musharu, Mgcini Sibanda, Thembani Masuku and Heritein Masuku all kept at bay.

Substitutes, Benjamin Marere, Tawanda Muparati and Godfrey Nguwodzawo also failed to penetrate the Dongo Sawmill defence.

“We had nothing to lose. It was a good game for us and I am happy with the performance. We are professionals and although we are out, we are not here to do anyone a favour. We are going to do the same in our last game when we meet FC Platinum,” Dongo coach, Shadreck Mugurasave said after the game.

They have only picked up 18 points throughout the season.
