The flamboyant Zanu PF politician and soccer legend James Takavada are the only two who have so far publicly stated their desire to enter the race for the post.
But a source at Zifa yesterday told NewsDay Sport that at least eight people had by Friday picked papers to stand for the local game’s biggest seat.
Among those who had collected their nomination papers were former Premier Soccer League secretary-general, ex-Dynamos secretary-general and Harare City Football Club chairman Leslie Gwindi, former Dynamos chairman Lincoln Mutasa and veteran football administrator Chris Sambo.
Gwindi on Saturday confirmed that he had indeed picked the forms although he said that doesn’t mean he will stand in the election.
The source added that former Zifa board member Francis Zimunya also picked up nomination papers although it is believed that he was fronting for South Africa based Trevor Carelse-Juul who lost to deposed Cuthbert Dube in the previous election.

“There are at least eight who have picked up the forms (for the President’s post) so far including among others Leslie who picked his on Friday, and Francis Zimunya collected two nomination papers for the President and board member. Chris Sambo has also picked up the papers and so did Lincoln Mutasa. This is for those who want to contest for the president post there are some who have also picked forms for other vacant posts,” the source said.
No comment could be obtained from Zifa as the association’s spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela said he was out of town while his boss Jonathan Mashingaidze was unreachable on his mobile phone.
With the Zifa nominations closing on Thursday, it was likely that more asprirants could emerge this week.
The nomination court is expected to announce the final list of candidates on November 15 ahead of the elections on December 5.
Atleast 58 councilors will converge to elect four board members, the president and his vice while the other two board member positions were reserved for the Premier Soccer League and Zimbabwe Women Football.
