WORLD Boxing Welterweight champion, Charles Manyuchi has decided to give up on sponsoring his national boxing tournaments due to lack of support, in a development that could signal the dearth of the sport in the country.

The 26-year-old, who successfully defended his title in Italy in July, held two amateur boxing tournaments in Mashonaland East and Harare provinces, where boxers were invited from all over the country to fight in a bid to resuscitate the sport.

The plan was to host the fights in all the country’s provinces and later turn into a national boxing league, but Manyuchi said he has been frustrated by lack of financial and moral support.

“I have run my race and others should take over. I tried all I could, with this desire and passion I have for the sport, I started this initiative hoping to see people coming together and make this work, but I can see I’m fighting a lone battle. It’s sad that it ended this way, but I have to take this decision,” he said.

“I think I have to take a rest because some of the things are quite frustrating. I think it’s time that I leave and allow others to take over. I have played my part in terms of giving back to the community and from here on I will be available to give some advice – I have shown that it’s possible. Now I have to concentrate on myself and my career. I have to start training, and keep my body in shape because I might have some fights early next year.”

Manyuchi first hosted the boxing tournament in Chivhu in September before another one at the City Sports Centre last week. More than 200 athletes took part in the two events, which he described as successful.

He paid for transport, food and accommodation for athletes and officials for the two tournaments, and those who won received medals.

Manyuchi attributed the success to the support he got from his principal sponsor, Mr T35, and Sports minister Makhosini Hlongwane.

“There is a lot of talent in the country, but they need a platform to showcase. These guys have a future, but need to be polished and guided. I can see some future champions, who will take over when I retire some two to three years from now. I can’t mention all of them, but there is one Casper Mkandla and Milton Moyo from Bulawayo, I think they are exceptional. Their future is bright, but they won’t flourish if there is no support,” the superstar said.

“I should applaud the Minister of Sport for the support in ensuring that this (Harare) tournament goes ahead, he supported me in every step. The Sports and Recreation Commission and the Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association also contributed and to Mr T35, thank you very much for everything you have done for me. You have played a big role in my career and I’m truly grateful.”
