Magwentshu made the remarks at a conference dubbed Gathering of Champions at Harare Gardens which started on Monday and ends today. The conference has attracted clerics like Apostle Sandile Mlambo from South Africa and other prominent AFM figures.

Magwentshu said Christians must not be “baby-sitted” or charmed by their church leaders, miracles and anointing oils.

“Champions are only realised after overcoming hurdles and challenges ahead. No one is crowned a champion unless he/she is prepared to confront his own Goliath like David. You also cannot conquer what you are not prepared to confront,” Magwentshu, a firm critic of the modern-day gospel of prosperity, said.

The firebrand pastor said if one was not equipped with God’s word then in the absence of their pastors they would backslide.

“In other words we are provoking people to be spiritual warriors instead of depending on the pastor, prophet or apostle who one day may leave or die as some have done because some have started their churches but soon left their followers alone.

“The church has lost its relevance because it is functioning without God’s initial mandate and mission of making disciples. The church needs to interpret what is transpiring in our nation as well as assist in advising leadership of all facets, more than singing hymns and spiritual songs and all-nights of deliverance to individuals. We are solution givers and not just spectators,” he said.

The conference came at a time when the AFM is celebrating 100 years of its existence.
