TENNIS development coach Richmore Murape yesterday said he was impressed by the high turnout Cranrid Petroleum Junior Tennis Tournament held at Harare Sports Club and Old Hararians Sports Club over the weekend.

The two-day event, which is one of the biggest development tournaments on the local tennis calendar, attracted over 190 players, most of them from rural and high density suburb-based schools around the country.
Murape, a top local tennis coach and brother of the late former Zimbabwe Davis Cup non-playing captain Claudio Murape, said the tournament was meant to give exposure to young players.
“Initially, we had targeted 100 players, but because of the high turnout, we ended up having a very huge turnout of 191 players from the 10 and under, Under-12 and Under-14 age group categories,” he said. “I usually hold tennis clinics at schools in the rural areas and high-density suburbs, so the main aim of this tournament was to give exposure to upcoming players. Most players who took part in this tournament came from schools in Harare, Masvingo, Marondera and Goromonzi, as well as Domboshava and Chiweshe,” Murape said.
Murape thanked Cranrid Petroleum for sponsoring the tournament.
“We would want to thank Cranrid Petroleum for coming on board to sponsor the equipment and prizes for the participants. Some of the participants could be our future stars, so we are very grateful for the support,” he said.

In some of the results from the tournament, Marko Milosavjevic beat Strive Bosha 6-3, 6-3 in the final to clinch the boys’ Under-12 category with the bronze medal being won by Mikail Raja.
Taona Muhwandagara was the winner in the boys’ Under-14 category after beating Kumail Mohamed 7-6, 6-2 in the final. In the girls’ Under-14 category, Claire Machisa beat Ruvarashe Shoko 6-1, 6-2, while the bronze medal went to Victoria Sasinka.
