IN today’s world, which is inundated with generalised motivational and inspirational literature, Maxwell Tapatapa’s book, Highway to Success, stands out for being a succinct and practical wisdom compilation specifically targeted at teenagers.

Even though the information contained in this concise personal development handbook, recently published by New Heritage Press, applies to people from all age groups, the author packaged the nuggets contained therein in a way that suits the restless mind and seemingly busy schedules of impatient teenagers.

Tapatapa believes that teenagers are a critical demography in any community since their imaginations, decisions and actions define the future wellbeing of any society.

As such, they need early exposure to relevant information that helps them in making well-informed open-minded strategic decisions for both personal and societal good.

With that philosophy in mind, the author, an entrepreneurial motivational speaker and youth leader, who is also a Bachelor of Arts degree student at the University of Zimbabwe, divided the book into 19 sections that every teenager should be exposed to in the journey of life.

He made sure that his targeted audience can easily and quickly understand the insights in Highway to Success by simplifying the terms and then highlighting some attributes that make the concept of personal development clearer to every reader.

While covering important life issues that tend to get most teenagers confused and drained, the author touched on such topics as enemies of progress, seizing the opportunity and awakening the giant that lies in every young person across the world.

For example, on the subject to do with a person’s character, he stresses that character is defined by habit and behaviour, which can generally be categorised as either good or bad.

He underscores that character is relative to success as good character results in qualities such as happiness, mercy and integrity, which are positive attributes for success, while a bad character produces confusion, violence and greediness, which are anti-success vices.

Tapatapa sets himself to help remove the inferiority complex from teenagers by explaining that there is an inherent giant in everybody that needs to be identified, developed and be promoted since this is the basis for establishing a life-transforming career.

Unlike a number of other motivational and inspirational material which simply tell people that it can be done if you maintain a positive mind-set, Highway to Success goes further to inform young people that there is need for them to put action and effort to their good thoughts and intentions in order to be successful in life.

The youthful Tapatapa highlights a number of real challenges that affect a person’s journey to success and then offers practical solutions thereunto.

He reveals that there are many things and circumstances that work against progress and these include laziness, misfortune, opposition and even curses among others, but also assures and encourages every teenager that mentorship, research and the right association are the toll fees to the right destination.

Tapatapa warns young people that as potential leaders and change makers, they must be cautious and vigilant of giving heed to the fear of failure and falling victim to treacherous and deceptive people who he terms as enemies of progress and dream stealers.

Highway to Success is a must-have for school libraries especially for primary and secondary schools. It also serves as an invaluable birthday present for teenagers all over the world in order to help them become the best that they can be for their own personal good and for the good of society.
