Party secretary general Douglas Mwonzora confirmed Mahlangu passed on in Bulawayo early Monday morning after battling cancer “for quite some time”.

“He succumbed to cancer early this morning in Bulawayo. We have been robbed of one of the most fearless fighters for democracy. A member of our standing committee and a long-serving cadre who also served as an MP for Nkulumane as well as national youth chairperson,” Mwonzora told NewsDay.

Mahlangu served as Deputy Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment during the inclusive government formed following the inconclusive 2008 run-off elections. Mahlangu was was the serving Member of House of Assembly for Nkulumane and also a former chairman of the MDC-T Youth wing.

He was elected deputy national organising secretary of the MDC-T at the 2014 congress following the party’s second split inside 10 years.
