Chinhoyi town clerk Mungororo Mazai has finally resigned allegedly due to pressure from councillors and frustration at constant ministerial directives.

Mazai initially resigned in May this year only to reverse the decision following the intervention of then Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo.

In his resignation letter, Mazai said he would be “pursuing other personal interests”.

Although Mazai could not be reached for comment, Chinhoyi mayor Test Michaels confirmed that he had received Mazai’s resignation letter.

“Yes, I can confirm that I received town clerk’s resignation letter yesterday [Monday] and he is now working for his notice until November 1, 2015,” Michaels said. Mazai and Michaels have been under pressure from the Zanu PF-dominated council to ensure transparency in the way they conducted business.

The councillors once clashed with Michaels over the way he handled some tenders.

At one council meeting all hell broke loose when the councillors accused the mayor of making decisions behind their back.

It was in the heat of the moment that Michaels agreed to step down as mayor, but was once again allegedly saved by Chombo, who descended heavily on the councillors. But council sources said the town clerk was being frustrated by ministerial directives that hindered progress within the council.
