One such occasion was at a bank in Harare, where they were hired to add life into protests by the bank’s workers and trade unionists, who were demonstrating against their termination on notice without packages.

The group left motorists driving past the bank’s Arundel Park head office in Mount Pleasant bewildered as they belted their mbakumba and Jerusarema dances for the workers.

The 12-member Mufakose-based arts group specialises in dance, drama and music that suits all situations.

Songs such as Takamirira Judgment, which tells of the need for hope while awaiting outcome of labour cases, were sung.

They also performed Kunzwanana highlighting the need to negotiate in settling grievances.

The group’s administration officer Charles Binwere told NewsDay that through strategic marketing, they were swiftly moving into such thriving markets.

“Entertainment is not only needed in times of partying, but also in situations like demonstrations, funerals and memorial services,” he said.

“We’re facing challenges such as lack of knowledge from potential clients who do not appreciate dance. The ailing economy has also negatively impacted on our work since there are a few business conferences and functions being held.”

The bank workers were protesting during a demonstration organised by the Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers’ Union on behalf of its members who had their contracts of employment terminated on notice, but were yet to receive their terminal benefits.
