Provincial chairman Joel Biggie Matiza yesterday declined to be drawn to comment over the issue, saying his executive was on a mission to strengthen the party.

“I am not at liberty to discuss sensitive issues concerning the party. What you need to know is that the new executive is working flat out to strengthen the party that has been weakened by factionalism,” Matiza said.

However, party sources told NewsDay that three of the affected employees were working at the party’s provincial headquarters in Marondera while the other seven were operating at district level.

A top party official who refused to be named said the 10 were fired after the new provincial leadership headed by Matiza accused them of leaking party secrets to ousted Gamatox members.

The fired officers at the provincial headquarters are Peter Murwira, Charity Govere and a female officer identified as Makunde.

“There are three party senior officers stationed at the party headquarters here in Marondera who were relieved of their duties. The purge also spilled to Murewa, Mutoko and Wedza districts where seven more officers left office,” a party source said.

“All the victims are accused of still being linked to the Gamatox faction members, who were fired or suspended from the party. These officers are reportedly leaking information on party operations to those who were fired. Their posts have already been filled by other dedicated members.”

In a bid to restructure the province that was once dubbed the “Home of Gamatox”, the new leadership that took over from the businessman-cum-politician Ray Kaukonde-led executive has been aggressive in its operations.

Recently, Matiza seized nine party grinding mills and generators from party leaders in Uzumba and redistributed them to party youths.
