IN a bid to reduce new HIV infections in Mashonaland East province, the National Aids Council (NAC) will on October 17 host an HIV and Aids gala at Rudhaka Stadium in Marondera that will see a star-studded line up of local musicians performing.

The gala, being the first of its kind in the country, will be held under the theme Getting Down To Zero.

Sungura ace Alick Macheso will be leading a team of artistes including dancehall chanter Killer T, Soul Jah Love, Leonard Zhakata and Mathias Mhere.

Mashonaland East provincial co-ordinator Wilfred Dube yesterday said the gala is meant to raise awareness campaigns on HIV and Aids.

“We thought of a strategy to reach scores of people in our campaigns and thought of hosting a gala at Rudhaka Stadium. During the day, women and children will participate in a number of activities that include a quiz and some will walk away with prizes,” he said.

“We will be informing the public on critical issues like male circumcision, HIV testing and counselling as well as cancer screenings.”

Musicians will then take over at night and the show will be interlaced with messages on the pandemic.

Mashonaland East has an HIV prevalence rate of 16% with Marondera district being at the top as compared to the other eight districts in the province.
