In the traditional Caribbean pantheon, street parties are known as passa passa.

The street parties lined up include the one headlined by reggae outfit Startime Supa Power in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

Dubbed Street Carnival Passa Passa, the gig is set for George Silundika Avenue between First Street and Angwa Street.

Starting at mid-day, the passa passa will attract some of the best Zim dancehall artistes, sound selectors and dancers who will put up an enthralling parade extravaganza.

For the first time in the city centre, The Basement Sound square up with Redemption Sound, while Digital One Sound will battle it out with Small Axe in a highly-anticipated “dup-plat” sound clash.

One of the longest serving outfits on the dancehall music scene, Silverstone Sound will level up the vibes with Legendary Sound, Last Generation, Black Spider and Startime Supa Power also on the decks.

Red Fox Carnival Street Party will be conducted along First Street and will see various dancehall artistes perform.

Guspy Warrior, Terminator, PTK, Logan, Jah Bless, Slash Smartex, Ninja Lipsy and Assassinator makes up the list of artistes anticipated to deliver showings.

Judgment Yard will also be entertaining fans on the occasion alongside Bodyslam family and Platinum Entertainment.

Street party organiser, Eddie Muffin of Team Legacy, told NewsDay that the street parties were “a true reflection of the carnival spirit and hype” that could be traced back to the Caribbean islands and Brazil.

“This will be one of the major highlights of the festival, considering the hype and attention that Zimbabwean dancehall is commanding at the moment. We will be giving a platform to other artistes to come and showcase our diverse culture,” he said.
