FORMER Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s People First (PF) political formation has disowned “utterances” attributed to former Hurungwe West lawmaker Temba Mliswa regarding an envisaged opposition coalition.

BY RICHARD CHIDZA

Mliswa, who of late has been frequenting MDC-T rallies, has reportedly indicated that any viable opposition coalition should be led by former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai if it is to be able to dislodge long-time ruler President Robert Mugabe.

But PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo yesterday said Mliswa was “driving a different agenda”.

Gumbo told NewsDay in an interview that while their political outfit had established contact with “like-minded” parties in the country, there was no coalition as yet.

“We are a democratic institution and will not deny anyone their right to free speech and Mliswa has a right to that as well. I would like, however, to say he is not speaking for or on behalf of anyone connected or associated with People First when he says Tsvangirai will lead whatever coalition will be formed,” Gumbo said.

“Mliswa has a different agenda from our own. We will not be drawn into speculating what he wants, but it has nothing to do with us. When we are ready, we will make a pronouncement as always and Mliswa will definitely not be the one to do that.

“No decision has been made and in any case we are still very much at the consultation stage. We are consulting with other democratic forces for a possible coalition, but to now pronounce anything related to its leadership is a bit premature.”

While addressing MDC-T supporters in Chikomba last weekend, the former Zanu PF Mashonaland West provincial chairperson questioned Mujuru and her group’s democratic credentials.

“If you are looking for a coalition outside Zanu PF, you have no choice because Morgan (Tsvangirai) is the leader, because he has more seats in Parliament than you guys who are coming on stage. So don’t hate me for saying that,” he said.

“Yes, I looked into the People First policy document where they say all political parties must be under her. Well! As who? And for what reason? And what are you (Mujuru) bringing to the table?”

Mliswa berated the PF group, saying they were not yet a notable or recognisable institution.

Gumbo said his party had made contact with a number of other opposition politicians.

“We have made contact with (Dumiso) Dabengwa, Simba Makoni, Tsvangirai and others, but we continue to consult for a sustainable alternative political voice that will help our people,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a statement yesterday, Gumbo mourned the death of former Information minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, who died in Bulawayo early this week, describing him as a dedicated liberation war hero.

“It is sad that such a sober-minded person, who comprehended fully the liberation struggle and the current socio-political and economic problems bedevilling the country at this juncture, when the revolution is at a crossroads, is taken away at a time his sober political character is needed most.”

  1. The issue is removing Mugabe system. Mujuru has securocrats support war vets support and rural support mainly in Mashonaland area whilst Tsvangirai has his traditional grassroots mainly in towns, Matebeleland, Manicaland and Masvingo. Both
Mujuru and Tsvangirai should start now to rigorously campaign together in their areas of strength and set structures.
Mujuru should lead the change campaigns with the previous set up of Prime Minister and President. Name of coalition party also has to change and be announced.
    Mugabe is going 2018

  3. So People last are already fighting before they formed the party. Uncle dydmas is very quet these days. I hope he nt on e same side with mzukuru Themba. kkkkkk Zim opposition so ka.

  4. With due respect to the whole opposition, everybody is entitled to an opinion but not to hold it as the truth or the only truth. At the same time, suggesting that for a coalition to succeed, it has to be led by a certain individual is both myopic and misplaced to say the least. At this incubation stage, such a remark is disheartening. Let all the willing competitors be subjected to a free and fair nomination exercise. Whoever carries the day should be cleared. The principle idea is not to oust the govt of the day but to serve the people better. If one fails to succeed, let him/her respect the will of the majority. Forming a functional coalition requires people with the ability to formulate and act from a philosophical perspective, not mere selfseekers. Tread carefully.

  5. Simba did his own thing in 2008, not on a war path with anybody, but an appealing policy and in a matter of weeks, he had 300K supporters. He proved to the voting populace that you do not necessarily have to uphold the same political landscape in order to succeed – unless you lack confidence.

  6. mliswa is correct. tsvangirai is not the best leader, but at present he is the one who can get us into the right direct to even give power to mai mujuru. working with him will help us take a closer step to what zim needs. he will not give us all as said but will help us take the step towards what we want, so that one day biti, dabengwa, mujuru, simba, ncube or anyone can have a chance to be president. if we continue to fight him at present none of the guys above will ever be president, zanu will continue to rule.

    • So what is the difference; all these are of cadres just hoodwinking poor Zimbos by claiming that they are opposition. Busa khulu imbongolo zize zimile impondo. Kutyei ivo vanhu vasiri decided, titongei dai mukagadzirisa magetsi chete zvimwe tozviona mberi

  7. Already fighting before they have confirmed coalition, the issue in Zimbabwean opposition, everyone wants to rule, whats in for an ordinary poor granny from Mutoko?Dr Shumba is the answer to this we really need fresh ideas and fresh legs,we have tried MDC and they failed to bring much awaited change in Zim..Vote Zimfirst its people first ideology works for ordinary Zimbabweans..

  8. Its quite disturbing how Temba is behaving nowdays. Although he is entailed to free speech his utterances are a big shame to those who are genuinely desperate for change. Tearing another opposition ‘party’ is giving the much hated ruling party a good advantage since an enemy within is dangerous more than twenty outside. My advice to Temba is just join Tsvangirai quietly and nobody has a problem with that. I hope even Morgan inside is not happy with your behavior. Mai Mujuru is suppose to focus on her project and pays no attention to this kind of man who speak before he thinks. Everybody knows that Temba is doing everything to his disposal to gain acceptance to the MDC T supporters and leadership but that can happen without tearing another yet to be party. Remember when you come here in Hurungwe as an independent we highly thought you have the blessings of Mai Mujuru thats why we supported you till the last day. Who are you Temba to deserve our support as an individual.
I wonder where are you up to maybe you want to form your own political party of which i doubt Mai Mujuru will be jealousy of you. Leave Mother Zimbabwe alone.

  9. guys lets be frank here what Mliswa is saying is true hate it or not MDC president Morgen has grass roots support base that is tested were as amai Mujuru has the backing of polical leadership, which make an ordinary Zimbabwean valnarable to abuse jus as Mugabes PF is doing so for start i do support Mliswa led Morgen clear the road for all would be leaders tomorrow.

  10. Zim poiltics dzaakunakidza manje. Dai anaTemba vambonyarara kani iyi party itsva yonyanzi yavapo.Mikono yonyatsodatsurana isu maspectator tonakirwa hedu. Panonzi sekuru vati dhii ndipo pachanakidza mirai henyu muone.

  11. Temba is very correct. i think Gumbo is offside. gumbo should not much energy on trying to criticize mliswa’s comment. politics its a game of numbers. People’s First what are they offering. form your own party zanu people first and start doing some rallies and from there we can measure them. mujuru and company if mugabe would say come back to zanupf, will they refuse the offer/ second chance. your guess is as good as mine. they will be running to mugabe – bootlicking once again. gumbo should stop acting like a zanu pf project, the same way madhuku & Biti are behaving. Mliswa you are spot on, maybe because uchiri mufana unlike gumbo namutasa.

    • a journey of miles starts with one step, Temba is entitled to his opinion yes but if it is directed at another that very person has a right to respond as well. democracy is about the people choosing their leader,if people want Temba, Mujuru, Morgan let it be. Temba is not a demigod to choose for people who to follow. it should be based on their ideology and how they have packaged themselves if I want Mujuru, Mugabe, Tsvangirai; I don’t need Temba telling me otherwise let it be

If I want to bootlick ndisiye ndakadaro ndozvandada

  13. I think he has a problem of keeping his mouth shut always. He talks of things that do not concern him in any way.I dont think the formation of a party by the Mujuru faction really needs his comments. Why cant he wait untill the water boils and food is prepared and he is called to come and eat.
I think some of these people in the so called formed party should please forgive him because he is terminally ill in his brains. He is that type of a person who feels some itching if he has not talked something. So in other words he is now decampaining those that were thrown away from the original Zanu PF.
This one is confused and should be brought to Ingutsheni for rehabilitation.

  14. Mujuru & team can not use People First for doing such is stealing from The Progressive Democrates of Zimbabwe(PDZ) who have been using the same for years now.

  15. Eehh politix esp dzemuno muzimbabwe dzinoda sober and hard-facts analysis, as we have learnt over the past 35 yrs.

  16. Politix 101 ur enemy’s enemy is ur friend. Its a simple and elegant truth which allows u to focus ur energy and efforts on the goal at hand – destroying the enemy. Even if this cmd in arms is not to ur taste that’s not the issue right now right now he is a tool u can use against ur opponent. Mliswa need not have discussed this in public becoz it is decisive even if he is right.

  17. In order to effectively use ur enemy’s enemy u need to accurately understand his strengths and weaknesses and of course ur own

  19. all this just goes to show that there isn’t a party called people first its just a mirage. If such institution existed themba would be a high ranking member and he wouldn’t talk like he is now. This people first is a media creation and its riding on a disgruntled populace who have bin so desperate fir better times. Those people first guys are just zanu pf rejects who after failing to get vack into the gravy train are just bitter empty vessels. Politivks is built on principle and a stand compromise yes but when ideologies are polar opposites no need. Mdc is one hollow institution ful of flip floppers and zanu pf wanna bes wy wud u entertain a human rights abuser like jb Sibanda et al. our opposition is just a bunch of guys who are fighting persobal zanu pf wars. until or unless we find true patriots we are doomed. Yes there are no permanent friends in politics but there shud be a line prrsonally i dont waste time with jb mliswa gumbo mtasa nevamwe for one they are old abd not in touch with reality. On the other hand tsvangson seens to be very gullible and sort of a hypocrite biti is too full of himself ncube is bit tribal madhuku is just a critic .In the end we are just coiled around by an axis ( screwed )
