The Old Mutual Westgate Half Marathon has become the biggest annual road race in the country and with prospects of rich pickings again this year and a strong field of professional and social runners, is expected to grace the event.

Old Mutual property general manager, Gilbert Gumpo, said the integrated financial services group sought to encourage and promote wellness and health in the communities it serves.

“The Westgate Half Marathon further buttresses Old Mutual Zimbabwe’s commitment to Zimbabwe, City of Harare as well as the sport of athletics in Zimbabwe. A healthy population will certainly contribute positively towards their nation’s economy,” Gumpo said.

“As Old Mutual, we believe we have a responsibility to support the communities we serve. We strive to show our commitment to Zimbabwe through the various programmes and events, whether here at Westgate Shopping Centre or any of our other projects, such as the Budiriro Housing Project that has added almost 3 000 low-cost houses to Harare.

The race is sanctioned by the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.

Jacob Mugomeri of Rimuka Athletics Club, and South Africa-based female runner Rutendo Nyahora will aim to defend their titles this year after emerging victorious in the main male and female races respectively last year.

Nyahora has been in top form and recently notched an impressive victory in the Pretoria Spar Women’s Challenge 10km race in South Africa a fortnight ago.
