LLOYD Chitembwe marked his return to the Caps United bench in sluggish manner, as the wasteful Harare football giants stuttered to a goalless draw against army side Buffaloes in a Castle Lager Premiership tie at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

BY TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA The Caps United faithful had been hoping to collect maximum points at home against army side Buffaloes, but they left the stadium disappointed after they shared the spoils.

Perhaps what disappointed them was that they dominated their opponents in all aspects of the game, except on the score board, as the envisaged goals were stubbornly elusive.

The Green Machine have scored just three goals in their last seven matches, as strikers Dominic Chungwa and Leonard Tsipa struggle in front of goal.

Crucially, they have won just one match in those seven matches and with eight games remaining before the end of the campaign, Chitembwe, who was given a target of a top-four finish will have to dig deep into his bag of tricks to get the goals.

The Harare giants remained stuck on seventh position on the league table with 31 points, the same as How Mine, who, however, have a better goal difference.

They are trying everything including changing a kit they normally use at home, but results are just not coming. Chitembwe was happy with the way his charges applied themselves.

“I thought we played well. They applied themselves well and dominated. Dominance is what we expected, but, of course, there are a few things like finishing that we need to work on. It is a process,” Chitembwe said before walking briskly across the field and disappearing into the dressing room.

The Green Machine carved out good chances in the first half, but Chungwa and Tsipa missed good opportunities on 39 minutes with Chungwa directing his effort wide, while Tsipa missed a headed opportunity.

Two minutes into the second half, captain Moses Muchenje and Tsipa also missed opportunities as Caps pressed forward. But Buffaloes also had some moments with former Caps and Dynamos striker Clive Kawinga causing anxious moments.

He had the ball in the back of the net five minutes from time, but the assistant referee flagged for offside.

Buffaloes assistant coach Joseph Takaringofa said they were happy to collect a point.

“We played well and are happy with a point. On a good day, we could have even won the match. We are happy with the way the team is playing. We still have five games at home and three away. We know we will not be relegated and in fact have never thought about that. If anything we are actually looking at finishing among the top six,” he said.
