Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the deceased had locked his family members inside their residence before leaving the house.

On returning, he tried to open a neighbour’s house and was mistaken for a thief before he was thoroughly assaulted.

Charamba said the incident happened in Ruwa on September 16 at 2350hours.

“On the said date, the deceased who is believed to be mentally challenged woke up from his residence and locked up everyone in the house before disappearing with the keys,” she said.

Charamba said the deceased went to a place in Damofalls suburb and went back home when it was getting cold.

“He went to a certain house and tried to unlock it using the keys he had brought from his home. Suddenly the owner of the house unlocked the door, grabbed him and called for assistance thinking that he was a thief. He was assaulted and dumped by the roadside,” said the police spokesperson.

The man was picked up by a well-wisher who took him to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he later died.

Charamba warned people against taking the law into their own hands and encouraged them to refer all cases to the police.
