The family described the 15-year-old Chiedza in a statement as “a loving daughter, sister, cousin and friend” that touched the lives of many.
“Chiedza was an accomplished singer, painter, actress and had a true love and gift for playing the mbira that she learned from her mother,” read the statement in part.
“She was an incredibly caring person who had dreams of pursuing her art and music.”
The Maraire and Brown families requested privacy during the mourning period, amid unconfirmed reports that Chiedza may have committed suicide.
The families have requested for donations to help during the funeral and the body’s repatriation to Zimbabwe courtesy of the Chiedza Brown Memorial Fund.
In a post on Twitter, rising mbira songstress, Hope Masike consoled the Maraire and Brown families over their loss.
Chiedza’s father, Andy, passed away on March 16, 2012 just before his 50th birthday. Chiwoniso died a year later at the age of 37.
