He has trained with the team in the past week ahead of the Castle Lager Premiership football tie against Buffaloes at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Chitembwe, who was given a target of a top-four finish, remained calm ahead of the clash against Buffaloes.

He told reporters at a news conference yesterday that he was pleased with the response of his charges.

“I am happy with the way the players have been applying themselves technically. Our primary objective is to try and improve the team. Winning games is a process and this game is important in the sense that Caps United is a big team. The coaches and the players carry a huge responsibility. I will try to improve the team in all aspects — the defence, the midfield and the attack,” he said.

Chitembwe said there was nothing intimidating about the remaining nine fixtures in which they would face defending champions Dynamos, in-form FC Platinum and Triangle, among some of the tough encounters.

“These fixtures have always been there and who said they are difficult? We have always known we would play Dynamos,” Chitembwe added. Team captain Moses Muchenje said the championship was no longer within their reach, but their target was now a top-four finish. “It has been a season of mixed fortunes. Our aim had been to win the championship, but we are now concentrating on picking maximum points. We now aim for a top-four finish,” Muchenje said.

The Green Machine are in seventh position on the league table with 30 points – 13 behind log leaders Chicken Inn — after 21 matches. They have lost two matches in their last five games of the campaign, drawn two and won one.

Their other remaining assignments are against Hwange (away), ZPC Kariba (away), How Mine (home) and WhaWha (home).

Buffaloes have also been struggling.

They are in 12th position on the league table with 21 points.

They have lost two, drawn two and won one, a 2-0 victory over Flame Lily, in their last five matches. Saul Chaminuka will, therefore, be eager to assert his authority as he battles to stay afloat.
