Vicious Hasha Nhundu (40) was facing 60 counts of contravening Section 136 of the Criminal Code, pertaining to fraud when he appeared before magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba on Tuesday.

The magistrate suspended 15 months of the jail term on condition the accused fully restituted the school on or before September 30.

But Nhundu was to effectively serve 18 months behind bars after a three months’ suspended sentence hanging over his head from a previous conviction of fraud in 2012 was lifted.

The school’s headmaster Charles Nyathi was the complainant.

The State’s case was that between January 19 and July 7 this year, Nhundu would receive varying amounts of tuition fees from parents and guardians. He would write the correct amounts received on the original receipt, but would then falsify the figures on the duplicate copy by under-receipting and pocketing the differences.

The matter came to light following a forensic audit. The amounts he embezzled each time he committed the offences ranged between $20 and $40.

The school was prejudiced of $1 175 and nothing was recovered.

In passing sentence, the magistrate considered that the accused was unrepentant as he was no stranger to the courts and had a previous conviction on a similar charge.
