MDC spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi said Mphoko should be ashamed of himself and stop being insensitive to the plight of millions of Zimbabweans.

“The continued stay by Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko and his family, including grandchildren, at a luxury hotel, at a time when the government’s coffers are reported to be running on empty is proof that the entire Zanu PF government is a contraption for the plunder of public funds for the enrichment of a few individuals with close ties to the centre of power,” Chihwayi said.

Mphoko has clocked more than 290 days in a local hotel gobbling more than $100 000 in the process.

“That the Vice-President can stay at a luxury hotel for more than 287 days with no trace of shame is clear indication that the government is a monster of insensitivity to the plight of the suffering millions,”Chihwayi added.

“You cannot end poverty by running up a $120 000 hotel bill when more affordable and stable accommodation can be secured. What VP Mphoko is doing is shameful and he must be told so in clear terms.”

The MDC spokesperson said if Mphoko had any shred of decency, he should apologise to the nation, check out of the hotel and find cheaper and more stable accommodation.

“He and his wife cannot continue to act like divas using funds meant to benefit the entire nation,” Chihwayi said.

“The MDC finds it incredible that President Robert Mugabe and his cronies in government continue to run up huge expenditures on luxuries when the country is headed for economic ruin. It would appear that the government is very committed to its mission of destroying instead of fixing the Zimbabwean economy.”

Chihwayi said Zimbabwe was where it was today because of such kind of “plunder.”
