A TOTAL of 30 established and upcoming female disc jockeys are set to battle for honours on the turntables tonight from 6pm till midnight at the Basement Club in what promises to be a tight showdown.

BY KENNEDY NYAVAYA Dubbed Female DJ Cup Clash, the competition will see the top three winners securing slots at selected night spots for the whole month and pocketing the cover charges while the ultimate winner will be given a cup to top it off.

Showdown organiser Douglas “Bishop” Mlambo said the initiative was focused on enhancing female talent that has been suppressed for long owing to social stereotyping.

“We aim to bring exposure and a platform for female disc jockeys so that they can showcase their talents on the turntables (and) it is also an opportunity for the promotion of feminism,” he said.

Mlambo said the platform would usher in a paradigm shift from the rampant sexual abuse of women for favours in the industry by many promoters.

“Too much talent is being wasted for lack of opportunities, resources and promotion. We are here with all that and without asking for anything in return,” he said.

“This is an opportunity for us to do away with misconceptions of the industry and instill confidence in the female entertainers that there is still hope for them through a move like this to bring about recognition and respect for them.”

He said the inaugural competition would give club goers a night to remember as they witnessed “the country’s best” lady disc jockeys perform.

Revered wheel spinners including Lady Thanda, Mai Chichie, DJ Lyaness and DJ Fire Lady are billed to rock the deck.
