New York Cosmos announced on their website on Thursday that the 27-year-old forward had put pen to paper for another year after joining the club in November last year.

“The New York Cosmos announced today (Thursday) that the team has signed forward Lucky Mkosana to a multi-year contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed,” reads the website.

The dreadlocked Mkosana renewed his contract with NY Cosmos after scoring the decider in their 3-2 win over Carolina Rail Hawks at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, New York, last Sunday.

NY Cosmos are on position two in the NASL with 19 points from 10 games, that is five wins and four draws, and have lost only once with Mkosana scoring his fifth goal in 19 league appearances for the club. Ottawa Fury FC are on top with 21 points.

“I’m delighted to have agreed on a new contract with the club. I love it here, we play with an attacking mindset and I feel that I’ve really developed my game,” the Bulawayo-born footballer said.

Mkosana plays at Cosmos alongside former Spain and Real Madrid great Raul and the Zimbabwean footballer scored a brace in June when NY Cosmos beat the Cuba national team 4-1 when Cosmos became the first US professional side to play in Havana in over 16 years.

Before NY Cosmos, Mkosana played in the same league with Tampa Bay Rowdies where he scored four goals in 34 outings.

NY Cosmos coach and sporting director Giovanni Savarese was delighted to be retaining Mkosana.

“Lucky has been a tremendous addition to the team. Working with him daily you can see how far he’s come and the progress he’s made. He’s added a real spark to offence this season and has done everything we’ve asked of him,” Savarese said.

Mkosana was selected by US Major Soccer League side Chicago Fire in 2012 but never signed, settling for Harrisburg City Islanders in the USL Pro League from Dartmouth College where he was 2011 Ivy League Player of The Year and was in the All-Ivy League first team for four years.
