After weeks of speculation and anxiety over the matter, a special council meeting to deal with the Mahachi issue was convened last night, where councillors endorsed the human resources committee’s proposal to terminate his contract.

Committee chairperson Wellington Chikombo read out the recommendations made by his committee on August 25 to terminate Mahachi’s contract and councillors from both Zanu PF and MDC-T unanimously agreed to end his eight-year stint at Town House, which was punctuated by mistrust and suspicion.

“Council resolves the termination of the contract of the town clerk in terms of the applicable law,” read the minutes in part.

“. . . that his worship the mayor [Bernard Manyenyeni] report to council the outcome of his engagement.”

Manyenyeni suspended Mahachi in July, only for the town clerk to return demanding a hefty $3 million golden handshake, but this was rejected as outrageous.

Mahachi was reportedly earning $37 000 a month.
