PREMIER Services Medical Investments (PSMI) radiographers have gone on strike over unpaid salaries, a move that is likely to cripple operations as some of its radiography service branches in Bulawayo and Harare might be closed.

by VICTORIA MTOMBA The strike action started on Monday, with the workers vowing to continue with their industrial action until they have received their outstanding salaries for the past five months.

Sources said PSMI, which is a subsidiary of Premier Service Medical Aid Society, has been struggling to pay its workers because government has not been remitting civil servants’ medical subscriptions.

PSMI’s eight radiologists in Bulawayo have reportedly downed their tools, forcing closure of the branch since Tuesday.

In Harare, about 20 radiologists have also not been reporting for duty.

On Monday, the group’s financial director, Victor Chaipa said the company had no money because government had not paid its dues to PSMAS.

Radiographers take X-ray images and also perform radiotherapy on people with cancer.

The non-payment of salaries to radiographers comes at a time when Treasury announced in June that it had remitted $61,6 million to PSMAS, leaving a balance of only $10 million.

PSMAS managing director, Henry Mandishona could not be reached for comment on his mobile phone.
