FOLLOWING a successful six-day physical theatre performance workshop last week, Almasi Collaborative Arts is set to premier a play titled Chirorodziva tomorrow and Saturday at the University of Zimbabwe’s Beit Hall.

BY KENNEDY NYAVAYA The workshop, which consisted of UZ students, professional and upcoming artistes, was the brainchild of director Tafadzwa Mutumbi who is also facilitating the play.

The premiere is scheduled for 6pm.

Mutumbi yesterday said the play was an all-in-one kind, which is a “must-see” for theatre zealots and upcoming producers as well.

“The production in as much as it shall cut deep to the daily challenges which confront humanity, is a must-see to all performing arts fanatics as it is a supercharged assortment of humour, poetry, dance and drama that shall cater to the different tastes of the audience,” Mutumbi said in a statement.

This is Mutumbi’s first production after his recent return from the United States where he was pursuing his studies in physical theatre at Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre.

“The play chronicles a survival journey through the mind of a weary soul that is trying to keep its aspirations afloat.

“It also brings to light the dreaded reality of how broken and miserable mankind can be when all they foresee in the midst of their efforts to attain their goals is a state in which they will be in a pool of fallen dreams,” he said.

The production shall feature a cast of experienced and emerging theatre professionals including actor and gospel singer Kudzai Sevenzo, Everson Ndlovu, Rumbidzai Karize, Memory Zikhali, Brezhnev Guvheya, Tholakele Anita Jim, Privilege Gwaba, Priscilla Mutendera, Tawanda Mutumbu and Khethani Michael Banda.

There has been an outcry over the poor quality of local productions, prompting many established directors and foreign organisations to chip in through workshops and other mechanisms to enhance local talent.
